Origins & Brand Beginnings

In 2004, two friends from the Amsterdam hip‑hop community, Edson Sabajo and Guillaume “Gee” Schmidt, founded Patta. Inspired by their Surinamese heritage – “Patta” means “shoe” in Surinamese street slang – the name embodies both cultural roots and Amsterdam street style. They recognised a gap in their local market: the city lacked access to coveted international sneaker drops that were available elsewhere. So they began personally sourcing sneakers in cities such as New York and bringing them back to Amsterdam in duffel bags. What started as a community‑driven endeavour soon evolved into an official retail store on Amsterdam’s Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 142. Their founders wanted to serve their local community out of passion and necessity rather than novelty or profit.

Identity & Core Philosophy

Patta’s brand identity is grounded in community, cultural authenticity, independence and creative collaboration. Since its inception, Patta has woven community engagement into its DNA. It evolved from a sneaker store into a full lifestyle brand that invests in creative initiatives like the Patta Running Team, Soundsystem events, Summer Schools, Patta Foundation and Patta Academy. These activities create genuine cultural impact beyond fashion. The design aesthetic mixes heritage with streetwear – bold colourways, Amsterdam‑inspired graphics and references to music, sports and urban life, all informed by Surinamese and Dutch background. This unique identity sets Patta apart in the global streetwear field and reinforces a sense of cultural belonging.

What They Offer

Patta creates apparel, accessories and footwear items that blend utilitarian function with streetwear flair. Their signature items include iconic sneaker collaborations – most notably their early Air Max Homegrown with Nike, and multiple iterations with Asics, Converse, Reebok and Jordan. They also produce graphic tees, hoodies, knitwear, outerwear, sportswear and accessories like bags and caps bearing distinctive bold branding and script logo designed by creative collaborators. The product range spans limited‑edition drops and seasonal deliveries for both men’s and unisex styling. While sneakers remain central, their curated clothing and accessories complete a lifestyle offer rooted in urban and cultural authenticity.

Collaborations & Creative Partnerships

Collaborative projects are at the core of Patta’s strategy. They have partnered repeatedly with major household names such as Nike, Asics, Reebok, Converse, Vans, Jordan, KangaROOS and more. These collaborations are thoughtfully conceived – Patta considers both its own DNA and the partner brand’s heritage, blending them into cohesive releases. Their sneakers often reference Amsterdam’s landscape, music culture and Surinamese roots. Beyond fashion partnerships they’ve collaborated on cultural projects including exhibitions, art installations, music events, custom Afro‑dolls, and pop‑ups in cities like New York, Tokyo, Seoul and Lagos. These collaborative ventures reinforce their impact across music, sport, art and youth empowerment.

Mission & Looking Ahead

Patta’s mission is to remain community‑first, culturally authentic and independent. They prioritise purpose and people alongside profit. That ethos underpins initiatives like the Patta Foundation, which supports social justice causes, and creative mentorship via the Patta Academy. In 2024, after celebrating their 20th anniversary, Patta appointed new leadership in order to allow founders to focus more on creative pursuits while preserving their brand vision. Expansion into Lagos marked their first African flagship store. In the coming years Patta aims to deepen community engagement, maintain quality over quantity in expansion, launch more pop‑ups, and continue supporting young creatives, athletes and cultural entrepreneurs.

Closing Thoughts

Patta is not just a streetwear label, it is a cultural institution born from Amsterdam’s hip‑hop and Surinamese roots, built with community at its core. With roots as a sneaker‑curating store, it has grown into a global brand celebrated for distinctive collaborations, social initiatives, and an independent spirit. As Patta heads into the future, expect more culturally resonant drops, community‑forward programming, and global growth anchored by their founding values.
